A Week to Remember

Well, its time to deliver the gadget station and we’ve got some driving to do. First we are stopping in Anaheim to attend BlizzCon 2008. See, I told you I was a dork! :) Then we are off to Northern California to deliver the gadget station to Leo Laporte. Guess who also lives in Northern California? Yup, David Marks. So with any luck, we will be visiting Leo on Monday and David on Tuesday.

As I was pouring my coffee this morning, the significance of this really hit me. If there were two individuals (besides Nicole), who I could pinpoint as being the most influential in my current career status, it would be these two. Without a doubt, David Marks is not only responsible for much of my education and style, he was integral in preparing me mentally for a lifetime career in woodworking. And Leo Laporte, with his many podcasts and online ventures made me realize the potential of the internet as a medium for woodworking training. His willingness to share information about things like advertising and sponsorship has been integral in our ability to monetize this website and the show. So although on several occasions I have referred to this whole trip as being “for Nicole”, it is undeniably for me as well.

I am bringing the camera with me and I will definitely get footage in both places. And if we can get a decent signal, we will also do live broadcasts. So keep an eye on the website either on the home page (bottom left) or on the Wood Whisperer Live Page. And from the looks of it, we will be on Leo’s Live NetCast site, TWiT Live on Monday. Should I be nervous? :)

  2. Wow, I had not seen the finished product before - it came out great! Really, I think you should consider licensing this design to be built by someone else and sell it on this website while you keep improvising up more new stuff and make videos about that. I look forward to seeing the final few gadget station videos.

  6. Don’t be jealous CcntMnky. lol

Hey Mattias, great idea. Only the design still needs some refinement :) Wanna help with that? :)

  8. Have fun and be safe. [NO tickets this time :)]

I was wondering about some of the games listed in your store. I thought to myself, “is he really the type of guy that’s into WoW?” I guess so.

    Enjoy the Con.

  10. I know nothing about Leo Laporte, but he sounds like a cool cat. You may recall I met David Marks and had lunch with him. Yeah. He’s a major cool cat.

I hope you can shed some light on what David is up to these days. I’d sure like to see some books or more videos from the David Marks shop.

Enjoy your road trip. Personally, I coudn’t visit Anaheim without a trip to Disneyland. But that’s just me. I grew up just down the street from the park. (Which explains a lot.)

  12. I hope you’re very proud of your effort on this project. It turned out to be the type of quality piece you would expect to find in a high end custom furniture store. Kudos!!!
The one thing I don’t understand…Marks and LaPorte have been more influential than me??? Really??? :D:D:D
Have fun Marc and Nicole! Try to make this trip a bit of a vacation for yourselves. You deserve the break.

  18. I had never heard of BlizzCon but I checked out the website - pretty cool stuff. It looks like it is extremely popular in Korea. The only game that I have on my computer is Tetris but may try one of those games sometime in the future. Is there one you prefer over the others?

  20. Vic, you will always be the most influential! lol. That goes without saying.

And Frank, their games all offer different things in terms of game play style. The one we play the most is World of Warcraft, which definitely isn’t for everyone and its a major time suck. lol.

  24. Marc,
See if you can get a copy of your visit with LaPorte to post on your site or is there a link to the specific show. I’d love to hear his reaction to such a great present.

  26. Excellent cabinet:

I watched you on TwitLive.tv. I snapped some pics as the show was on and blogged about it here:

    http://www.daleisphere.com/the.....g-cabinet/

My only critque of the cabinet is that it looks like it is designed to sit on the floor. I’d like it to be moutable on the wall somehow so you wouldn’t have to kneel down. I’d expect to need to get into the cabinet on a daily basis.

    But it sure is beautiful!

  28. Hey Marc,

Thanks for the feedback. I updated the post to add another picture showing where Leo placed the cabinet. He did indeed put it on another cabinet behind him.

I guess it was the inclusion of the legs on the cabinet that made me think it was for the floor. I would have thought there would be just some small feet or rubber bumpers on the bottom if it was destined to be placed on a shelf.

Looks great sitting behind leo the way it is.

  32. I found out about The Wood Whisperer about 2 months ago, and have been ravenously catching up on the podcasts. Now, I find out that not only do Marc and Nicole play WoW, but they know The Instance (and particuarly Patrick from France), and Leo Laporte from TWiT. It’s like the ultimate confluence of my geeky hobbies! (Yes, I consider woodworking to be a geeky hobby… it’s a combination of the tools, and the fanatic attention to detail that it sometimes requires).

Looking forward to much much more wonderful stuff from Marc and Nicole in the future… thank you for feeding my habit with your fantastic podcasts!
