A quick look into David’s latest creation. Its a massive disc-shaped turned piece with a big marquetry image on the front. David gives us a rundown on his process and some of the challenges he is facing with this piece. Its almost like an episode of Woodworks…..sort of.

  1. Matthew Hills says:

Interesting that he chose poplar for the leaves. My first inclination would have been bamboo.

    Matt

  2. Keith Leonard says:

Matt, I used green poplar for my leaves as well on my wine cabinet door marquetry. It looks great and is very easy to work. I’m impressed with the scope of that project David’s doing, can’t wait to see it completed! That’s an advantage of being pro, to have the time to do something on that scale.

  3. Dan M says:

Damn, that man is so talented. He’s got got great artistic vision and great skill to turn that vision into reality.
    That is just awesome.

  4. Bas says:

This is really cool. But, when you think about it, it’s the woodworking equivalent of scrapbooking :-)

  5. Claude Stewart says:

He sure is a master at his craft. Thanks for making him accessible to us Marc. Claude

  6. Germain says:

Another chapter in the adventures of “Amazing Dude”!

Thanks, Marc. These David Marks videos were sure worth the wait.

What’s the advantage of using apple ply? Is it more stable than other types of ply? I’m also wondering how expensive it is. I don’t recall ever seeing it at my local sheetgoods supplier.

    • Thanks Germain! Glad you (and everyone else) are enjoying the series.

As far as apple ply goes, its pretty much an American version of Baltic Birch, but a little harder to find. It has more plies than the regular plywood so it does tend to stay flatter. So it makes a great substrate for veneering and apparently wacky disc-shaped turnings. :)

  7. Kevin Wilson says:

Finally the answer I’ve been waiting for! Do you know how long I’ve been wondering what to do with the stockpile of polynesian vegetable ivory nuts I have lying around the shop? Thanks David! (I’m kidding of course…David Marks is true inspiration to me…much like the Wood Whisperer!)

  8. Jason says:

    Marc,
Have you heard anything further about this piece? I went to David’s site and the site of the Hawaii gallery, but couldn’t locate this piece. I’d really love to see the completed work with all its colors.

  9. Blair Glenn says:

I saw the piece about 6 weeks ago and it is a work in progress. This level of detail might take David a year to finish. (See if he takes that as a chalenge to prove us wrong)

    Blair
