Some of you may recall our visit to Ohio last spring. While we were there, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit a woodworking store that I had heard great things about: The Wood Werks Store in Columbus, OH. Pictures just can’t do this place justice! Wall to wall tools, lumber from floor to ceiling, and a Rockler store built-in! Amazing! Since this store is essentially a woodworkers playground, I thought it would be fun to give you a little tour. Wood Werks has also made great efforts to bring the magic of their retail location online. So you can now shop for all the latest and greatest tools and supplies at WoodWerks.com. And I can’t forget to mention Wood Werks’ Powermatic Custom program. Its a PM2000 on steroids!!

That may be the coolest store I’ve ever seen. EVER!
I may find myself in Columbus, OH for work at some point in the future, but until now I never thought I’d be happy with that! ;)
Great store – I think I will visit it for Christmas! I will be in the area anyways!
Thanks for the post Mark. It was neat to see the store again.
I have spent a lot of time and money in WoodWerks and became good friends with the staff. I would say that I fully endorse WoodWerks.
Getting the “Board Room” was great but I missed the industrial machinery showroom when they took it out. Gotta be honest though, it was a lot of eye candy that I could never buy, however, I did buy a lot of wood there and appreciated the great selection. The bonus was that the wood was well stabilized from being stored in a well conditioned space, unlike the open metal buildings at many places.
They have a great frequent buyer program for CMT bits and blades. I spent quite a bit of money on the bits and received several free bits from the program. I love CMT bits and blades, they are exceptional for the high end work that I have done.
they could so attach a hotel on the side for vacationers :)
Joseph, you’re a genius! I would SO go there for vacation :D
I have to say, it’s a blessing and a curse having this place less than 10 minutes from my house. I’d say it’s a blessing, my wife would probably tell you it’s a curse ;)
Woodwerks is the coolest, I am one of the lucky people to have a place like this close to me. It is only about 10 miles from my house and even closer where I work, less than 2 miles. I stop in there all of the time, usually once a week of so.
The expansion/remodel was great, the “Board Room” is much bigger than it was before. They have recently expanded the Festool area as well.
Glad you liked your city, this gives you a reason to want to come back.
Wow! And only a short 2000 mile drive from Idaho! Can’t wait to stop by the next time I am out and about!
I’m so happy I live in the Columbus area! :)
Wow. I’ve lived in Columbus for 10 years and never knew of this place until now. Granted I’m not a wood worker, I just enjoy the idea of becoming one. I guess you could say I’m living vicariously through you and all the other wood workers. Would love to be able to do some wood working, but I lack the time (currently) and live in an apartment with no space for the hardware.I’m going to have to visit this store just for the total joy of it.
If I bought one of those custom painted saws, I’d have to have a block M on it. Columbus Oh., block M, somehow I don’t think those two go together. Claude
I was so impressed by your video, I decided to review the entire site for one of my companies, you can see the site review here.

I also told my visitors on another site (WoodMarvels.com) to do the same. Those guys have an amazing site. Great interview by the way!

Road Trip
Do they have RV parking ?
Thanks for showing me what heaven looks like.
Ken F – They have an itty bitty parking lot. I have trouble getting in and out with my contractor truck.
Marc,
This store looks great and you looked like the little kid in the candy shop, but what really got my attention was the solid cast iron top on the saw. Boy did that bring back memories…………………… . .. .
About twenty years ago plus a couple I was ready to make the big jump, you know the jump, that one where you finally decided to quit screwing around and make a go of this wood working thing, well that was me. I decided it was time to retire the trusty 10 inch Crapsman and that, to this day f_ _ _…P.O.S fence, and buy me a real cabinet saw. I looked at both the Unisaw and the 66. I liked the 66, I could afford the Unisaw. Well really I lusted after the Model 66. The Unisaw is a good saw, really it is. The 66 is just better, sorry to all you Delta owners. If you don’t believe me ask Marc. And it’s nothing you can put your hand s on, both saws will cut stuff perfectly well long after you or I am cold and buried twenty years in the ground. Anyways I figured I’d be buying a Unisaw. I looked around here in Cleveland, not many woodworking stores and no deals to be found. But there were these traveling wood working shows, missed the Columbus show but there was going to be one in Pittsburg,PA. in a couple of weeks, I’ll go to that.
The weekend of the show I had to meet with a client about building cabinets for a library in his new house. I was shaking; this guy had no idea how important it was for me to get this job, this was the job that was going launch my career. Well I got the job and I timidly asked the guy for some money, you know, to a ….. guarantee a date in my busy calendar, and a ……drawing got to have drawings. I asked for $1500.00 and he gave TWO GRAND (those were the days).Woke up Sunday to a blizzard. Only briefly did I even consider not going, what’s a little snow. An hour and a half trip took almost four hours. The Convention Center was pretty empty and I got a knot in my stomach for just a minute thinking it was closed, but it wasn’t, just nobody there. There was three hours left of the show. On the drive out I was making a mental list of the things I needed to look at. I had also convinced myself of the need to get a Shaper (for all the raised panel doors in the library) .I made a beeline for the Delta Dealer.” What do you mean you don’t sell saws, you’re a dealer?””We are hear from the factory, just to display the tool line, you got to go see them as he pointed down two isles one flanking each side of his display”. I was a man on a mission. Working the booths I was looking for a deal and I had money to spend.
It’s hard to remember exactly but I think the best deal was about seventeen or eighteen hundred for a Unisaw and a shaper, I remember thinking I can do this. Then it happened! Half way up the second isle in the middle of a both that took up three stalls. A Powermatic Model66 the color of GOLD and a gold Bismayer Fence and a full cast iron top 28 inches deep by 72 inches wide polished to a mirror’s finish. The booth was pretty much empty. I casually walked over to the Unisaw on display and fussed around with it until the guy came over, I went thru my routine about thinking about a new saw and what kind of deal do you have for the show and mentioned that Joe Blow wood work Supply had for this much and could you do better. And he could. Great, Hey what about that Powermatic? OH THAT!, that’s special, ordered it special from the factory just for the show, thought we would sell it for sure , tuned –up special and comes with a Forrest blade, thing weights a ton don’t really want to load it back up on the truck tonight.”Really”, I said so how much? I think he said about sixteen hundred my heart sank I can’t afford that for a saw, I thought. And then I hear myself ask the guy how much for the saw and the Model27 Shaper, I think he said twenty six or twenty seven hundred bucks. I think I mumbled something like Wow, that’s a lot of money or that’s a lot more than the Delta stuff. I kinda wandered off and as I was leaving the booth he said “It’s a better machine”.
I went to find a cup of coffee, have a smoke and clear my head I had a big decision to make. Time was short, less than thirty minutes, I really did not have more than the two thousand, a little more maybe, but I had to buy wood and stuff with that money. My wife would kill me if I went into the savings, maybe I could take a little bit. I went back and asked the guy if he thought he might be able to sell the saw and the shaper for twenty five hundred. He looked around, up and down the empty isle, looked at me and said “YES, yes I think I can”.
I have never ever regretted buying my saw.
Awesome story dryhter – thanks for sharing it.
I haven’t actually gotten to Marc’s video yet, but I loved the story it prompted :)
Marc,
Was visiting the in-laws in Dayton over the holidays and I made time to visit WoodWerks on your recommendation. What a great store! I told them you had sent me and they said quite a few folks had come by on your recommendation. I will make it a regular stop whenever we are up there.
What is the square footage in that store? My dad and I will be around Pomeroy for a guitar camp at the end of May, and I am trying to convince him to go up there. He’s a contractor programmer, so when he’s not working, he sees the money disappearing. But I am hoping that when he hears “it’s 10,000 square feet!” or whatever it is, he might change his mind. Besides, we need a new jigsaw.
Hey Matt. I honestly have no idea how many sq. ft. the store is. But its definitely the biggest woodworking showroom I’ve ever seen. I am sure if you give them a call they will tell you the square footage. Here’s their contact page: http://www.woodwerks.com/contact.php
ahh If I only lived closer to ohio. Its just a long drive from Los Angeles. As a teenager in wood work I have to deal with a lot of crap at woodwork stores. I dread the routine trips to rockler, woodcraft and the like. First off, The salesmen are one of three types. There is the kind who assumes you know nothing and wants to be your teacher… “The first step in using a miter saw is pulling this trigger.” Next up is the egotistical type… I wish i had someone like me to teach me when i was your age.” finally there is the the one who assumes you know nothing, but tries to sell you stuff you don’t need. One salesman even tried to sell me a pwermatic pm2000 when i was buying my first table saw. when i was in the market for chisels one tried to sell me $50 japanese chisels because the irwin/marples “wouldnt do” lol nice vid marc good luck with the new shop. cant wait to see. I too have a three car garage.
Hey Marc if I could only buy one router which one should I get
I can’t really recommend a specific brand, since many of them will do just fine. But if you could only have one router, I would recommend a plunge base for the most versatility.
what about this one from festool I know it is really expensive but in my experince with other things you get what you pay for but do you think that it is worth the money http://www.woodwerks.com/festo.....-2764.html
That’s a nice unit, for sure. But make sure you get your hands on one first before buying. That router is very heavy and very large. So if you are looking at the Festool line, consider the OF1400.
