A Clean Shop- Question of the Week

August 7, 2007 | Filed Under Blog, Question of the Week | 13 Comments

This week’s question comes from Jim. He writes:

Your shop is always soooooooo clean. Is that because:
a) You like to work in a clean environment?
b) You have a camera looking over your shoulder?
c) Your wife’s in next room and makes you clean up?

I do find your site informative and entertaining.
Keep up the good work.

And here was my reply:

“Well Jim. The truth is that I am the clean freak in the family. My wife generally pretends not to notice messiness in the house and she sure as heck doesn’t care what my shop looks like! In fact, I am still trying to teach her where the dishwasher is. She doesn’t learn very fast. :)”

“But you do bring up an important topic: shop cleanliness. A dirty shop is not only dangerous, but I personally find it stifling to my creativity. That may sound weird but I like a clear mind when I am “creating”. And seeing a bunch of stuff laying around the shop just annoys me and clogs up the limited space in my brain. So I keep it clean. Now, unlike most people, I do have a little helper. My step-dad, who also likes to see things squeeky clean, is the man behind the vacuum. He does the grunt work and helps me keep my sanity in the shop. So I do have him to thank for a large part of what you see. But ultimately, the cleanliness comes from the simple fact that I am anal.”

“Now a clean shop may not be necessary for everyone, but I do think its a good idea, if for the sake of safety alone. There is nothing worse than tripping over crap on the floor or knocking tools off the bench accidentally. One of my cleaning secrets is just a simple habit. I may have mentioned this before. I like to put 10 things away every time I enter the shop. A pencil counts as a “thing”. A screw can even count as a “thing”. But if you do this every time, youf shop WILL be cleaner. Give it a try!”

Check out DJMarks.com for more information on David’s classes, DVD’s, project plans, and metal leaf & patination kits.

There have been so many changes recently to TheWoodWhisperer.com and WoodTalkOnline.com, we figured a video announcement would be the best way to get the word out for everything at once. A few of the highlights: The ‘New’ WoodTalkOnline.com. Updated Wood Whisperer Store. The new Frappr Map. The new FAQ and Links pages. And finally, our new HD Widescreen RSS Feed.

Irwin's new quick adjust wrench

The other big piece of news is the Irwin Giveaway. We have teamed up with Irwin to bring you new tools whenever they are released. This time, a lucky winner will receive their new quick-adjust wrench. This little guy will really save your time and as well as wear and tear on your thumb! It’s a great addition to anyone’s toolbox.

Irwin's Big Chalk LineThe second item is Irwin’s massive chalk line. This sucker is huge! It comes with 4 different chalk colors. Even if you never use it, this thing sure will impress your friends!

The third item (no picture), is a very cool Powermatic die cast truck. Normally you have to purchase one of Powermatic’s big tools to get this little guy. But we are giving one away for free. So that’s three prizes for three winners.

To enter, simply send an email to twwpromo@gmail.com with the word “contest” in the subject line. That’s it! We will draw three lucky names at the end of August so get your email in soon. A special thanks to our good friends at Irwin and Powermatic.

Your Dust Mask- Question of the Week

August 1, 2007 | Filed Under Blog, Question of the Week | 4 Comments

This week’s question comes from Tom. He writes:

Did FWW require you to wear the respirator? I wear one as needed but not for every operation. I don’t recall seeing you wear it in previous episodes. Norm doesn’t regularly wear one. Just curious.

And here was my reply:

“Hey Tom. I wear my respirator just about any time I make dust. I never wear a dust mask simply because the respirator is more comfortable and much more effective at keeping the dust out of my lungs. A dust mask would be fine for most people in most situations. I just find the full respirator to be much more comfortable over long periods of time. It may be overkill at times, but there’s nothing wrong with a little overkill when it comes to your lungs. :) And one quick bit of advice: I definitely wouldn’t use woodworkers on TV as a model for your personal safety habits. I recommend doing your research and deciding for yourself how much protection is necessary. I tend to be a bit of a hypochondriac and I think my safety habits tend to reflect that.”
