Episode 23- AWFS 2007 (Part 1)

Its been a week since the AWSF show in Vegas and I am still hyped up about the experience. Hanging out with the woodworking elite and meeting all the Wood Whisperer fans was incredible. Nicole and I would like to thanks everyone who introduced themselves. This video gives you an inside look at AWSF 2007. We have live demonstrations from David Marks, Scott Phillips, and Mike Heavey. I will apologize ahead of time for the audio quality. You would not believe the amount of ambient noise in a place like that! But sometimes words are just not needed. You’ll know what I mean when you see me chatting with the one and only Norm Abram.

Live Webcam Footage from AWSF

This is just a sample of what we were able to do with the live webcam at the AWFS show in Vegas. Not too bad for streaming live over the internet. Since this outing was a good proof of concept, our next one will be even better. We have ways of improving both video and audio in the future. The camera was on all week but unfortunately we did not capture all of the footage. What you see here is a shot from inside the Festool booth during one of my presentations.

Popular Woodworking Norm Abram Interview

This is an awesome interview with Norm Abram. I know I occasionally poke fun, but Norm really is a huge influence. You can’t deny what he has done for the hobby. Its great to see him out of the shop.

Leveling a Plant Stand- Question of the Week

July 25, 2007 | Filed Under Blog, Question of the Week | 9 Comments

This week’s question comes from Maurice. He writes:

I just finished a 5′ fern stand in poplar ready for spray in Cloud White. The problem is, despite accurate dimensioning and execution of mortise and tenons etc, the piece wobbles ie. it is fractionally unlevel. What is the best way to correct this problem? Thanks for the feedback.

And here was my reply:

“Hey Maurice. I would place the stand on your tablesaw or similar dead flat surface. Put some weight on the top so that the stand stays in one position (doesn’t wobble easily). Now here is the trick. Lay a sharp pencil down on the saw and trace a line around each leg. Now simply cut each leg exactly to the line. If you marked properly and cut to the line, the stand should be perfectly even with no wobble. And the closer you get that pencil to the table, the less material you will need to remove. So consider sanding the pencil down so one end is nice and flat and the point rests about 1/16-1/8″ above the flat surface. Make sense?”

Episode 22- Live Finishing Q&A

During the filming of our last podcast I decided to do a quick finishing Q&A with the chat room. I was able to get it all on tape and that’s exactly what this is. Random questions and quick answers. Enjoy.

Star Gazing

My Favorite Kind of Hero

July 21, 2007 | Filed Under Blog | 14 Comments

Even as a kid I was never really interested in mainstream stars and never gave a crap about Hollywood. I always seemed to be intrigued by people who do amazing things, yet don’t find themselves on Entertainment Tonight. After spending 3 days, so far, at the AWSF Fair in Las Vegas I have realized how fortunate I am that I idolize accessible people. And as a person who aspires to make a name for himself in the area of woodworking education, I get awfully excited when I meet some of the big players in the industry. Everywhere I look I see someone that has influenced me as a woodworker. David Marks and Scott Phillips are giving demos at the Delta booth. I see the Popular Woodworking crew meandering around the Festool booth. Norm is signing autographs. And one of the MANY highlights of my week was finally meeting and chatting with Chris Schwarz and Glen Huey. I follow Chris’s Blog and his articles in Popular Woodworking and Ive seen almost all of Glen’s videos. So I was really excited when I ran into them at the Steel City booth on Thursday. As I quietly inspected Steel City’s new granite-topped offerings (secretly waiting for a chance to introduce myself), Chris actually introduced himself first! We had exchanged a few emails here and there but I never expected him to actually recognize me. After few minutes of conversation, it was clear that these guys were quite humble and perhaps even a bit unaware of their influence on the woodworking masses. And as a person who is just starting to cope with the concept of people recognizing him in public, their humble nature was inspirational to me.

And yes, we did stand in line to shake hands with Norm. Nicole and I told him we were from The Wood Whisperer and Norm actually knew who we were. Ummm, someone pinch me please! We gave him a Wood Whisperer t-shirt and he then began talking about online woodworking videos being the way of the future and how the guys at The New Yankee Workshop are discussing the possibility of putting old episodes on their website. How cool would that be??

And the real high point of the week occurred last night. We had an incredible evening with David Marks and his lovely wife Victoria. Stay tuned for the exclusive interview!

To sum it all up, I really feel bad for people who idolize celebrities who they will probably never meet. Fortunately for me, I have the opportunity to meet my heroes on a regular basis. I guess for me they are like Paris Hiltons with handplanes. Ok maybe there are other differences but you get the idea.

AWFS Meet Up UPDATE

July 19, 2007 | Filed Under Blog | 3 Comments

Hey everyone, Nicole here. The show is going great! Marc is working hard in the Festool booth (check out the live stream!) and I’m working the floor. However I need to put an update out about our original TWW meetup on Friday at 8-8:30. As much as I hate to do this it looks like I will need to reschedule our meet up. Please know that the reschedule is for a reason…Marc and I have secured an interview with David Marks for the show! Soooo the new time for the Wood Whisperer meet up is now Saturday at 6pm (still in the Las Vegas Hilton lobby). From the lobby we have a number of options for either dinner, drinks or dessert :) All in all it will be a great time to hang out with each other and reflect on the show. Thanks for your understanding and swing by the Festool booth and say Hi even if you can’t come to the meet up!

TWWLive on Location: AWFS Fair (Vegas)

July 17, 2007 | Filed Under Blog | 4 Comments

Hey everyone. The Vegas wood show is nearly upon us! It should be a very interesting experience as I will be slaving away at the Festool booth. If you plan on attending the show, please stop by and say Hi!

So Nicole and I figured it might be cool to set up our live webcam at the show. And although Nicole is charged with walking around and getting good footage for The Wood Whisperer podcast, she may also walk around with the webcam. So you wish you could be there but you cant? Maybe we’ll be able to give you a live inside look! Now the reason I say “maybe” is simply because there are many variables outside of our control. Namely, the reception of our mobile internet connection.

Our hope is to have the camera going all four days and it will primarily be pointed at my demo station. But since the goal of the demo station is for the people to see what I’m up to, I can only hope we get a reasonable angle for the camera. If not, we will get whatever footage we can throughout the day. And if we cant get any due to complications, I apologize ahead of time. So starting tomorrow, keep and eye out at TheWoodWhisperer.tv .

Oh and one last off-topic thing. We recently set up a viewer survey that will help us with our future sponsorship and advertising negotiations. Its a small set of questions dealing with your viewing and purchasing habits. If you have a few spare moments, check it out. We also have a link to the survey in the top right portion of the page in the “Whats New” section.
