Skill-Building Projects - Question of the Week

October 31, 2006 | Filed Under Blog, Question of the Week | 2 Comments

A major part of what I hope to accomplish with The Wood Whisperer, aside from the obvious videos and articles, is to give my fellow woodworkers a place to go when they just can’t find answers anywhere else. Whether you need advice on a technique, a tool, or even on your woodworking career, I am here to help. Now despite how much I try to convince my wife, I don’t have all the answers. But fortunately, I have a lot of friends in the industry. So if I dont know the answer, I probably know someone who does.

So as a new feature, I am starting the email question of the week. This weeks question comes from Tony.

He writes:

“I am just starting out, as a recreational woodworker, are there any key projects / techniques that you would advise I master as a way of ‘growing my skill set. I am planning to build my own Cabinet makers bench later this year and currently am working towards mastering the skills I will need for this.”

Episode 3- Refinishing (Pt. 2)

In Part 2 of the refinishing series, I review some details concerning the table-top itself and take a look at the leaf expansion system, which is pretty unique. I also give some tips on how to determine what type of finish you might be up against, in order to determine the best way to remove it. And the last topic I cover is lead testing and safety. I hope you find this video useful and informative. As always, thanks for watching!!

The Wood Whisperer Featured on G4 TechTV!!

That’s right!! I was lucky enough to have the show featured on the Canadian G4 show, Torrent.

Its really an honor to see the show get any sort of attention at all. I teach woodworking classes simply because I love it, and this video podcast was intended to be an extension of that, only with a much broader audience. Seeing my show featured on an actual television show is quite a thrill and exceeds my expectations in every way. The show aired yesterday, October 28th. Apparently the remaining portion of “Episode 2- The King and His Castle” will be featured next week!! So if you are in Canada, TUNE IN!!! If you are not in Canada, you can download an .avi file of the show here.

The shows that feature The Wood Whisperer are numbers 27 and 28. Enjoy the show, and thanks for all of your support!!!

Episode 3- Refinishing (Pt. 1)

In this episode we embark on a journey into the world of refinishing. I was originally planning on moving right into lumber milling, but this last minute job seemed like a great opportunity to share some information about refinishing. I am trying something a little different with the format this time. Instead of one huge video, Episode 3 will be broken up into 6 parts. This way, I can post more frequently and the videos will be smaller for your downloading and viewing convenience. Part one will give you my thoughts on refinishing and the role it plays in our lives as woodworkers. I will also show you how I inspect old pieces of furniture in order to develop a refinishing plan of attack. With this new system, you can probably expect a new episode nearly every week. And if I am feeling saucy, maybe more than one. Thanks and enjoy!!

Just a quick update!!

Hey everybody! Just wanted to let you guys know that I currently have two shows in the works, and they should be out soon. I originally had these lofty dreams of creating a podcast on whatever topic I thought was interesting. I also thought that I would be able to put them into a perfectly logical order. But life has its way of changing our plans, doesn’t it? So, what appears to be the most logical way for me to keep the content rolling out is to actually make podcasts that have something to do with the project that is currently moving through my shop. So for instance, I wanted the next video to be about selecting and properly milling lumber (among other things). Well, since it will be pretty counter-productive for my business to stop everything and show you techniques using scrapwood, I have decided to simply film the process as I prepare for my next project. I think it will actually turn out for the better since it will add a bit more “reality” to the video. So if I mess something up, you will get to see me flip out. ;)

But before that show gets posted, I had the opportunity to film some aspects of a refinishing project I am currently tackling. I should be done with the project by tomorrow, so lets hope I can get the video posted by Friday. It may be a bit out of sequence to jump right into a refinishing video, but I see no other way to consistenly keep the videos rolling out. And don’t worry, there will be plenty of useful tips and tricks that don’t involve refinishing exclusively.

So bear with me as I get comfortable with this process. Honestly, the hardest part is trying to keep the camera in one piece. Electronics and woodshops generally DONT MIX. :) Just ask my last radio!
